Q: What is Japan eSIM, and how is it different from the SIM card I used before?
A: eSIM, also known as embedded SIM, is a new internet method that allows you to scan a QR code to add various network plans to your phone's mobile plan. Once the eSIM is added to your phone, it automatically searches for and connects to the network based on the virtual SIM card’s information, without any further settings required. Compared to physical SIM cards, eSIM is more convenient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective. You don’t need physical delivery or card swaps, and it works immediately when you arrive in Japan, with no time pressure.
Q: Do you recommend a physical SIM card or an eSIM?
A: Currently, eSIM is mainly supported on Apple devices (iPhones), with a few Android devices, like the Google Pixel, also supporting it. Please check the "Supported Phones" section in the table above. If your phone model is listed, we strongly recommend using eSIM. Otherwise, if your phone doesn’t support virtual SIM cards (eSIM), don’t worry; we also recommend the physical SIM card plan for internet use in Japan. The physical SIM card is a 3-in-1 size that fits all phone models, and the network content is the same as the eSIM plan, highly recommended by users.
Q: I’m excited to try eSIM, but I’m worried about possible issues with this new technology.
A: Don’t worry! As long as you follow our step-by-step tutorial guide to bind the Japanese eSIM to your phone, your phone will definitely be able to connect to the internet. The virtual SIM card is already inside your phone, and we’re just adding the new Japan network plan. The success rate is almost 100%, and we have not encountered any issues with internet connectivity.
Q: What if I can’t access the internet in Japan?
A: As mentioned, we have not encountered any issues with internet access. Some users report problems with connectivity, but this is usually due to not enabling "Data Roaming." Once this is turned on, your phone will connect to the Japanese network. Of course, our professional tech support team is available, and if you encounter any issues, feel free to contact our online customer service for immediate assistance.
Q: Can I use this in Okinawa?
A: Our Japan internet plans, whether physical SIM cards or eSIM, cover all of Japan, including all islands, so Okinawa is no exception. The plan uses the KDDI and SOFTBANK dual-channel networks, which are the same as those used locally in Japan, offering fast and stable internet speeds.
Q: I don’t understand the internet plan options. I’m going to Japan for 5 days; which plan should I choose?
A: The duration options include the most popular travel periods. The most important part is the internet plan. Our Japan eSIM plan offers both throttled unlimited data and non-throttled unlimited data options. eSIM and physical SIM cards are available. The throttled plan offers daily data allowances of 1GB, 2GB, or 3GB, and once the daily limit is reached, the speed will be reduced. However, you can still use basic services like messaging. The data resets at 01:00 Japan time. If you're concerned about speed reduction, we recommend the non-throttled unlimited data plan for a smoother experience.
Q: Is it possible to not install eSIM or to not scan the QR code?
A: If you've previously installed an eSIM or another virtual network plan on your phone, you may see a message stating that the eSIM already exists when scanning the QR code. In this case, go into the previous eSIM settings and remove it. Once removed, you can scan the QR code again to add the new Japan eSIM. If, after removing the old eSIM, your phone still cannot scan the QR code, reset your network settings by going to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
Q: Is it better to add eSIM in your home country or once you arrive in Japan?
A: Since eSIM requires an internet connection to be activated, we recommend setting up the virtual SIM card in your home country to avoid any issues with not having internet when you arrive in Japan. Installing eSIM in your home country will not activate the plan until your phone first receives the Japanese signal. The eSIM will start its validity period once it connects to the Japanese network at 01:00 Japan time.
Q: If I add the eSIM early, will the validity period start?
A: The eSIM will activate when it first receives a Japanese network signal. It will begin its validity period at 00:00 (Japan time 01:00). Since you can't receive Japanese network signals in your home country, the validity period won’t start, so you can safely install it ahead of time.
Q: I’m flying to Japan tonight; how long will it take to receive the QR code?
A: No problem! After placing your order, the system will immediately send your eSIM details. Please check your email (including the spam folder) about 5 minutes later.
Japan eSIM Guide - Removing eSIM
Many people ask how to remove the Japanese eSIM plan after returning from Japan. It’s simple: Go to the OKSIM network plan (your Japan virtual SIM), scroll to the bottom, and you will see an option to delete the eSIM. After clicking that, the network plan will be removed.
Please note that some eSIM plans cannot coexist on the phone. For example, if you installed a Japanese virtual network plan this time, you may find that you cannot install a new plan next time. If you have trouble scanning the QR code, please first remove the old Japanese virtual network plan, then scan the new QR code to add the new eSIM.
